The
story of women’s volleyball in Perugia started
thanks to the passion for the game of a local
parish. Father Aldo Falini was the first actual
coach to string together a series of prestigious
wins and put together a very close group of people.
As Pallavolo Sirio reached in the early 1980s,
thanks to the fighting spirit shown on the court,
the Italian Serie B (third division) the passion
of the Perugia fans was set ablaze and more and
more people were fascinated by this simple and
yet thrilling sport. Expectations soon shot through
the roof as new significant sponsors and new and
accomplished management staff contributed to put
together ever more competitive line-ups. In 1986
current President Carlo Iacone made his debut
in the team and the Serie A2 (Italian second division)
became just a matter of months.
1989 went down in history as the year of the promotion
in the Serie A1 (Italian first division). A dream
come true. From then on the team started racking
up a series of significant wins such as the Coppa
Italia 1992 and a string of championships led
for the whole regular season well ahead of the
competition. Ruthless and thrilling play-offs
brought Sirio twice within an inch of the tricolore
as the team capitulated on both occasions in the
final game.
The
team started going international and made its
debut in the European Cups always ready to take
on any opponent and bearing well in mind the pride
and joy of the whole organization: its junior
teams which supplied over the years a real wealth
of talented players trained by scrupulous, enthusiastic
and motivated coaches.
As years went by wins kept flowing in. Except
for the hapless season 1995 and the relegation
in the Serie A2, Pallavolo Sirio always enjoyed
a place in the Elite of international volleyball
as witnessed by the Coppa Italia won in 1999,
the Cup Winners’ Cup won in 2000 and the
good placings gained in the Italian Championship.
Year 2003 was a historic year for Sirio: again
a win in the Coppa Italia and the much longed-for
Scudetto; Perugia gained thus the right to participate
in the 2004 European Champions League in which
the team made it through to the final. In the
next season Perugia was again amongst the leading
teams as they won the Coppa Italia, the CEV Cup
and, once again, the Scudetto gaining thus the
right to participate in the 2005-2006 European
Champions League. The European Champions League
was win in Cannes in March 2006.
